Old Fashioned Date Bars

This classic old-fashioned bar is easy to make. I adapted this recipe from the 1951 New Fannie Farmer cookbook.

The only difference between these date bars and your great-grandmother’s is the almond flour, and maybe the honey. I’m betting that she would enjoy these. I think you will too.

Preheat your oven to 345F degrees (175C). Grease and line a 9″ x 9″ (23 cm x 23 cm) baking pan with parchment paper. I just use one piece to make a “hammock”. This makes them easy to remove and place on a cooling rack.

Whisk the dry ingredients in a small mixing bowl. This will get any lumps out of the almond flour.

Cream the butter with the honey. Then whisk in the eggs, then the vanilla. Then stir in almond flour mixture.

Stir in dates and chopped nuts.

Spread into prepared pan and bake until tests clean with a toothpick, about 20 – 25 minutes. Do not overbake. Baked goods made with almond flour can taste like cardboard if overbaked.

AND..I slightly overbaked this batch (see the edges), but they were still good. Cool completely before cutting. Makes 16 2-inch bars.

Old Fashioned Date Bars

1 cup Almond Flour

½ teaspoon Cinnamon

½ teaspoon Sea Salt

¼ cup Butter, softened

¼ cup Honey

2 Eggs

1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract

1 cup Walnuts, chopped

1 cup pitted and chopped Dates

1. Preheat oven to 345 degrees. Grease a 9” x 9” baking pan and line with parchment paper.

2. Whisk almond flour, cinnamon, and sea salt in a small bowl.

3. Cream butter and honey in a large mixing bowl. Whisk in eggs until combined, then add vanilla.

4. Stir in flour mixture just until combined. Then stir in walnuts and dates.

5. Spread mixture evenly into prepared pan. Bake 20 to 25 minutes until cooked though.

6. Run a spatula along naked edges. Remove the bars from pan by lifting out parchment paper and place onto a baking rack to cool. Cut into squares. Refrigerate when cooled.

  1. Hi Linda,

Great question. I’m afraid there isn’t one. I had to go with the free template and I didn’t see an option for that. Or maybe it’s there but I’m not too sharp on figuring it out? (very possible) I’ll have G look into it and see if he can find a way.
